InternationalWomen’sDay,onMarch8th,ismeanttohighlightinequalitiesfacedbywomenaroundtheworld.Oneofthegrimmestisviolenceatthehandsofmen,whichismuchworseinsomecountriesthanothers.Womeninpoorplacesaremostatrisk,withhardshipmorelikelytomakemenlashoutandsocietiesmoretolerantofabuse.WomeninAfricaaremorethanfourtimesmorelikelytobekilledbytheirpartnersorfamiliesthanwomeninEurope.IncountriesincludingAfghanistanandtheDemocraticRepublicofCongo,morethanoneinthreewomenreportbeingassaultedbytheirhusbandsinthelastyear.Suchfiguresprobablydonottellthewholestory:astudyfoundthatwhentheiranonymitywasassured,womeninRwandarevealedtwiceasmuchabuseaswhentheywereaskeddirectly.Butwomeneverywherearecampaigningwithgrowingboldnessforstrongerlaws,andagainstsexistattitudes.

3月8日的国际妇女节，意在强调世界各地的女性面临的不平等现象。最令人担忧的是来自男人的暴力，一些国家的情况比其他国家更严重。贫困地区的女性是最危险的，艰苦的生活使男人更容易狠打女人，社会更能容忍虐待。在非洲，女性被伴侣或家人杀害的可能性是欧洲女性的四倍之多。去年，包括阿富汗和刚果共和国在内的国家，有超过三分之一的女性报告称被丈夫家暴。这些数字可能不会说明问题的全部内容：研究发现，在确保匿名的情况下，卢旺达的妇女所遭受的虐待比直接被问到的妇女多两倍。但是，各地妇女都在以更大胆的运动来争取更强有力的法律，并反对性别歧视态度。
